Deriving subject matter from dreams and daily interactions with natural spaces, Miranda Crabtree creates interdisciplinary imagery as panacea to these sorted impressions. Her figurative work makes use of installation, painting, and printed matter to describe rich, fantastical narratives detailing secret lives of women. Playful figures frozen in their act, found in dreamy environments, embody a physical autonomy and momentary pleasure that melts into the tangled spiritual domain of the pastoral. This work springs from a modular arrangement of mysterious, non-linear agents of narrative that have developed from a group of silk paintings and continue to branch out across an ever-expansive scope of media. Also illuminated, through the pictorial narrative and tension between material treatments, are feelings of conflict between artist and practice/self and landscape within a changing urban setting.
Crabtree’s work echoes a two-fold and deeply felt concern for her surroundings that connects current ecological dissonance with the restricted ability of women to move safely through urban wooded spaces.
